Cybersecurity
Security for Small & Medium Businesses
Threat detection, endpoint protection and security audits tailored to small and medium businesses. We find the gaps in your defences before someone else does and put controls in place that actually hold.
Why small and medium businesses are targeted
Attackers go where the effort is lowest. Phishing emails, stolen passwords, invoice and payment-redirect scams and ransomware cause most incidents, and none of them needs a sophisticated attacker. A small business is as likely a target as a large one, with less capacity to absorb the cost.
Protection works in layers
No single tool stops every attack, so good security is built in layers. Email filtering stops many attacks before they reach your staff. Multi-factor authentication protects an account when a password is stolen. Endpoint detection and response watches devices for malicious behaviour. Patching closes known weaknesses. Backups let you recover if everything else fails, and trained staff catch what technology misses.
A practical baseline: the Essential Eight
The Australian Signals Directorate's Essential Eight is a set of eight mitigation strategies that Australian organisations use as a practical baseline: application control, patching applications, Microsoft Office macro settings, user application hardening, restricting administrative privileges, patching operating systems, multi-factor authentication and regular backups.
It is a useful yardstick when reviewing your current setup and deciding what to fix first.
Signs your security needs attention
- Staff share logins or reuse passwords
- Multi-factor authentication is not switched on everywhere
- Nobody is checking whether devices and software are patched
- You have never tested restoring from a backup
- Staff have not had any security awareness training
- You are not sure who has access to what
What is not included
Everyday protection, monitoring and training are delivered as part of your plan. Larger remediation projects and any formal compliance certification are scoped separately, so you see the cost before work starts.
What We Deliver
Endpoint Detection & Response
Protection on every laptop, desktop and server that watches for threats and responds, instead of relying on an antivirus that only checks files.
Email Security
Filtering for phishing, malicious attachments and invoice or payment-redirect scams, which are the most common way small businesses are breached.
Multi-Factor Authentication
Multi-factor authentication and sensible access controls across email, cloud apps and remote access, so a stolen password alone is not enough.
Vulnerability Scanning
Regular scanning to find missing patches and weak configurations, with a clear list of what needs fixing and in what order.
Security Awareness Training
Practical training for your staff on spotting phishing and payment scams, because people are the first line of defence.
Security Audits
A review of your current setup that shows where the gaps are, so you can decide what to close first.
Why Choose TandemIT
How We Approach Security
- Step 1
Security review
We assess your current setup, find the gaps and rank them by risk, so you know what to fix first.
- Step 2
Plan and proposal
A prioritised plan with a clear proposal, as a fixed monthly plan, per ticket or per project.
- Step 3
Deploy protections
Endpoint protection, email filtering, multi-factor authentication and security baselines are put in place and tested.
- Step 4
Monitor and train
Ongoing monitoring and patching, staff awareness training and regular reviews so protection keeps pace with new threats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is antivirus enough?
No. Traditional antivirus checks files against a list of known threats. Endpoint detection and response also watches how software behaves, so it can catch threats that are new or have no known signature.
What is multi-factor authentication, and do we need it?
It asks for a second proof of identity, such as a code or an approval on a phone, as well as a password. It is one of the most effective controls available, because a stolen password alone is no longer enough to get into an account.
How do you protect against invoice and payment scams?
With layers: email filtering to block fraudulent messages, multi-factor authentication to protect accounts, and staff training to spot requests that look wrong. We also recommend a simple rule of verifying any change to bank details by phone.
Can you help us line up with the Essential Eight?
We can review your current setup against the Essential Eight and prioritise the gaps to close. It is a baseline for improvement, not a certification you pass.
Is cybersecurity included in managed IT?
Yes. Endpoint protection, email filtering and multi-factor authentication are part of a managed IT plan, and cybersecurity can also be scoped on its own.
What should we do if we think we have been breached?
Disconnect the affected devices from the network, do not delete anything, and contact us straight away. Managed clients have after-hours emergency escalation for critical issues.
